COVID-19: Education policy, autonomy and alternative teacher education in Israel

The study evaluates an alternative initial teacher education programme launched nationwide by the Israeli Ministry of Education (MoE) at height COVID-19 crisis. aimed to attract unemployed academics teaching, thereby providing a response shortage. To advance programme, MoE relaxed its strict regulations and granted training institutions further autonomy develop their own programmes. After three months intensive online training, students were expected start teaching continue studying once week for another year while on job during induction year. Since teachers, unlike other hired employees, continued working from home via distance learning this period, previously unattractive profession, turned into desirable one hundreds potential candidates applied programme. research, conducted in large college central Israel, examined motivations 125 student teachers join sense preparedness satisfaction with level commitment teaching. Findings showed that who participated our research displayed high levels intrinsic extrinsic motivations. They reported satisfied indicated profession. results strengthen importance tailor-made programmes hence value greater policy.
